LLANGEFNI hit Dolgellau with two quick-fire tries in the space of four first half minutes, scored by centre Ioan Jones and left wing Rhys Hughes, to clinch a 12-6 win in what was a pretty even and hard fought Division One North encounter between these two fully committed sides.

Clear-cut chances were at a premium, but Dolgellau’s endeavour deserved a bonus point, as they enjoyed plenty of possession and territory throughout, without really threatening - due mainly to the outstanding visiting back row of No 6 Declan Griffiths, No 8 Wil Bown and openside Tom Owen making a nuisance of themselves in the loose and breakdowns.

Dolgellau centre Dylan Evans threatened after a charge down kick after 15 minutes and second row Rob Lewis’ cover tackle prevented a Llangefni score.

After 25 minutes Dolgellau hooker Eon Williams and second row Marius Jones carved a half chance, Llangefni were caught off-side, and full-back, Henri Roberts slotted over the penalty for a 3-0 lead.

The match was turned on it’s head on the half hour mark. A poorly directed Dolgellau chip was gleefully gathered by Llangefni centre Ioan Jones, who sprinted home from half way. Wing Rhys Hughes converted to give the Islanders a 3-7 lead.

Four minutes later, Llangefni second row Dion Oliver made in-roads deep into Dolgellau territory, the ball was moved quickly to wing Rhys Hughes who darted down the left touchline to make it 3-12.

To their credit, Dolgellau recovered their composure, and following breaks by half-backs, Jac Roberts and Gerwyn Thomas, Dolgellau were awarded a penalty in the very last play of the half. Full-back Henri Roberts made no mistake and the half ended evenly poised at 6-12 to the visitors.

With defences on top there was no further scoring during a tense second half.

Dolgellau prop, Dewi Puw nearly sneaked in at the left corner after 10 minutes, and wing Rhys Lewis knocked-on with a clear run-in after half an hour.

Despite Dolgellau being in good territorial positions, Llangefni edged the set-pieces, and the match became attritional.

Dolgellau were not content with a losing bonus point, and desperately went seeking the winning score, but in the final four minutes they were lucky as centre Gareth Hughes’ high tackle saw a yellow card, as well as a kickable penalty. However, the kick drifted to left of the post and Dolgellau held on to secure a bonus point.
