LLANGEFNI ran in five second half tries to severely dent Dolgellau’s title ambitions within Division Two West, winning 42-15 in their very hard fought battle north of the Menai Straits.

The bonus point they secured makes the islanders favourites to win the division at the end of February.

It started so well for Dolgellau, and they had the perfect start as prolific try scorer and centre Dylan Evans went over on five minutes.

Six minutes later he crossed for his second try following a lineout 10 meters out. This time skipper, Gerwyn Thomas was accurate with the conversion to put the visitors 0-12 ahead.

Llangefni hit back within three minutes as right winger Aron Evans went over for the try, which was converted by their stand-off Greg Horsman to make it 7-12.

Llangefni were looking threatening and after 25 minutes Horsman himself crossed for their second try to level matters at 12-12.

The hosts lost prop Gareth Pawson to a yellow card with a couple of minutes remaining, and Dolgellau capitalised and regained the lead with a penalty to Gerwyn Thomas, to give the visitor a slender 12-15 advantage at the interval.

The Islanders upped the stakes during a torrid second half for Dolgellau and took only three minutes to take the lead for the first time in the match, with Mark Gray crashing over.

They crossed for four further tries, through Aron Evans, Rhodri Parry, with Carwyn Owen adding two late tries, one of which was converted by Horsman.

Carwyn Millburn added a penalty kick to complete the visiting team’s misery.

Llangefni now trail Dolgellau by only nine points, but they have three games in hand, and probably three bonus points that will ultimately give them the title comfortably, and crucially take with them this bonus point win into the playoffs.

HARLECH ran in for a total of 19 tries to inflict a heavy defeat on Holyhead in their double header match, and it didn’t take long for the hosts to show their class.

Scrum half Martin Perch went over to score a converted try early on, and soon afterwards doubled their lead with an unconverted Andrew Stone Williams try.

With Harlech well on top, they were further rewarded as full back Gareth Davies crossed for the first of his three tries, and soon after the Castlemen scored their bonus point try, courtesy of Cedri Williams.

Another quick try followed, this time from Harlech captain Eon Williams, then soon afterwards number eight Sion Rees went over for the Castlemen’s sixth try.

That was quickly followed by Harlech’s seventh try, scored by winger Ynyr Robert, who scored the first of his three tries for an emphatic half time scoreline of 41-0

In the second half the floodgates really opened, with Ynyr Roberts scoring his second and third trries, before Alex Evans went over to score the first of his two tries.

Harlech scored again with three more converted tries, by Carwyn Jones scoring his first and second tries of the match, and Ewart Williams also got on the scoresheet.

Two more tries were scored courtesy of Gareth Davies, who completed his ha-trick, and then a second try by Alex Evans.

The Castlemen also kicked well, with outside half Aeron Griffiths successful with five conversions, and Carwyn Jones successfully kicking four conversions.

On the stroke of full-time, Holyhead outside half Steve Davies was successful with a consolation penalty kick to make the final score Harlech 113 Holyhead 3.

Holyhead nominated the influential Llion Kerry as the Man of the Match.
