A DRAMATIC last-grasp try - a push over effort from Denbigh’s No 8 Liam Alsopp-Jones with less than two minutes remaining - was enough to clinch a hugely entertaining 33-29 win against Dolgellau, in a match where the lead changed hands five times.
Denbigh move up to joint second position in the table, but Dolgellau remain two points clear at the top, thanks to the two bonus points they got from this match.
Dolgellau had started the match brightly and they went ahead when prop Dan Brazier put over a penalty.
Three minutes later, some surging runs by second row Bryn Jones and prop Greg Smithies saw centre Gareth Hughes crash over, to put Dolgellau into an 8-0 lead.
Denbigh, however, clawed their way back into the game, courtesy of a penalty by centre Dan Lawrence after 10 minutes, and going into the second quarter they drew level as full back Kieran Bonar avoided several tackles to score a fine try.
On 25 minutes stand-off Jamie Winning broke free from half way and drifted down the left touchline to score a memorable individual effort, and Denbigh led for the first time in the game at 13-8 - and that was how it stayed at the interval.
Five minutes into the second period, Dolgellau regained the lead, when wing Rob Pugh took play deep into the home half, and saw skipper Dewi Thomas off on a strong run that took him over for the score. Brazier converted for a 15-13 lead.
That lead only lasted five minutes as centre Dan Lawrence put Denbigh ahead with his second penalty to make it 16-15.
As Dolgellau stood off their defensive duties, Denbigh took full advantage and centre Matt Hulse went over after 15 minutes, the try converted by Jamie Winning.
The home side then stretched their lead as winger Aidyn Jones finished off a great team effort, courtesy of an outrageous pass from prop Gareth Jones, to put his team into a commanding 28-15 lead.
Dolgellau, however, kept their heads and responded magnificently, with replacement winger Rhys Lewis setting up centre Dylan Evans for a score that Brazier converted with 10 minutes remaining.
They spectacularly went ahead three minutes later following a huge kick from replacement Gerwyn Thomas, which saw centre Evans gather and release wing Rob Pugh for a try. Brazier converted magnificently to put the visitors ahead at 28-29.
There was still one cruel twist of fate to come, however, as a lineout steal five metres out saw the Denbigh eight take several attempts to cross, which they finally did, for No 8 Alsopp-Jones to clinch it.
