LAMPETER 104 ST DAVIDS 0
ON a weekend of high rugby drama, Lampeter put Division Three West A opposition St Davids to the sword with an emphatic three-figure win at North Road.
With no less than 15 tries to their name, Lampeter displayed great accuracy in their game, finishing moves aplenty, with four early tries for winger Carwyn Lewis.
There was also a hat-trick for fellow winger Garth Griffiths, along with single scores for Ifan John, Glyn Jones, Tomos Rhys, Emyr Richards, Guto Jones, captain Daryl Davies, Owain Jones, Ryan Holmes, and making up for a missed chance the previous week, veteran Aled Bowen. Fly half Osian Jones converted 12 of the 15 scores.
Lampeter had meanwhile lost the services of young talented full-back Sam Whittingham to a broken wrist during the match, and all associated with the club wish him a speedy convalescence.
Credit must be given to a depleted St Davids for plugging away up until the final whistle. Lampeter, for their part, will be keeping their feet firmly on the ground, knowing that the next four games will be tremendous battles, and will give a more accurate appraisal of where they stand at this moment in time.
Man of the Match Ifan John noted that - whilst they know they have played some tough games so far this season - this week’s tough away match against Laugharne will be a huge step up in physicality.
With four wins from five league matches, Lampeter are currently second in the table, behind early frontrunners Pembroke Dock Quins.
PEMBROKE DOCK QUINS 5 ABERAERON 12
ABERAERON, with a much-changed squad, made the journey to South Pembrokeshire aiming to inflict a first defeat on the unlikely league front runners, after a remarkable change of fortunes saw the Quins notch four consecutive wins.
This was sure to be a test of the Seagulls’ resolve and their squad depth, with several enforced changes because of injuries and non-availability in the pack.
Ceri Davies took over at hooker to allow captain Sion Evans to fill the back row berth, with a new centre pairing of young Iwan Evans and Ollie Sawyer.
The new combinations bedded in quickly and Aberaeron were encamped in the Quins’ 22 for the first quarter, but their only reward was a single penalty, which was slotted over by Rhodri Jenkins.
It was a hard, physical encounter at forward, with the Seagulls getting the better of a heavier home eight, with Owain Wozencraft and Alex Danton forming a formidable front row with hooker Davies. A series of infringements led to a yellow card - and the sure-fire Jenkins took advantage with a second penalty kick.
The Quins’ main weapon was centre Jack Price, who continuously broke the first line of defence, only to be thwarted by Evans and Sawyer - and not be outdone the centres strove to create their chances, which resulted in further infringements and two more yellow cards.
Aberaeron were encamped in home territory for long periods after the turnaround and the odd foray by the hosts was thwarted with long touch finding clearances by Jenkins. The outside half continued his rich vein of form with a further two penalties, and despite a late rally by the Quins, their only success was a corner try by Price which went unconverted.TREGARON 8 LAUGHARNE 85
IT was a difficult day at the office for Tregaron as visitors Laugarne played a superb brand of running rugby, which they could not contain.
The home back line had a different look from previous games, as a number of regulars were not available - and this resulted in players playing in unaccustomed roles, which did not help the cause.
From the first minute to the last, the visitors put width on their play and used their speedy backs to beat the defensive line with real ease. Their inter-passing and off-loading was a joy to watch, and some of the tries scored were amongst the best seen for many a year in Tregaron.
The Ceredigion outfit didn’t help themselves with some poor tackling at times - but although the scoreline suggests a totally one-sided game, this was not the case.
In-between the try scoring, Tregaron had their share of possession and territory, but once they lost ball, anywhere on the field, a productive counter-attack was initiated.
The only time the home team troubled the scorer was midway through the first half as second row Rowan Edwards forced himself over after a series of pick and drives.
Laugharne scored six tries in the first half and seven more in the second period.
Will Evans scored a hat-trick, and there were two tries each from Mickey Williams, Tom Davies, Tom Jameson and Richie Waters. Rhys Thomas and Steph Davies also went over, and Tom Jameson added nine conversions and Steph Davies one.LLANYBYDDER 39 CARDIGAN 14
LLANYBYDDER welcomed Cardigan to Parc OJ, and they notched a convincing bonus point victory over their rivals in Division Three West A last weekend.
Flanker Dion Howells crossed for the first try after a fine individual run, with fly-half Steff Richards crossing for a second try after a dominant home scrum.
There was a conversion and two penalties for Richards as the home side capitalised on their dominance, whilst Cardigan outside half Llyr Jones scored a try and a conversion, after Bydder failed to deal with an up and under, to make it 18-7.
In the second half, home skipper Ricky Davies crossed from close range, Dion Howells scored his second try, and centre Llyr James also scored, with Richards adding three conversions - whilst wing Rhodri Davies scored an interception try for Cardigan, converted by Llyr Jones.
