PWLLHELI emphatically maintained their pressure on Division One North leaders Nant Conwy as they produced a try fest in their last home game of the season, hammering Abergele 127-0 in front of another good crowd.
In almost ideal conditions, with a firm pitch firm and only a slight breeze, the match was played at pace throughout.
Gele’s pack competed well, but once the ball was spread wide they were exposed.
Four minutes in, Pwllheli took the ball into Gele’s 22, but several sniping runs were thwarted, so they resorted to bulk.
Keeping the ball tight, No 8 Huw Williams benefited from a rolling maul to go over, and Osian Parry Jones converted.
From the restart Pwllheli kept possession and several lateral runs committed the Gele’s defence, before full back Danial Glyn Williams straightened the line and beat he cover to score an unconverted try.
Abergele then had a good 10 minutes. They had a hefty back line and for a time backs and forwards worked well together, but the home defence stood firm.
When Pwllheli broke from defence, they made ground and the inevitable happened as Williams again powered his way over, and Parry Jones’ kick made it 19-0.
The all-important bonus point try came after a powerful run from left wing Robin Hughes Jones, and Parry Jones converted.
Three further tries were scored in quick succession through flanker Tom Parry, and centres Gareth Lloyd Williams and John Pugh, all converted by Parry Jones.
In the last move of the half full back Danial Williams scored a long range try, which made the score 54-0 at the interval.
Abergele’s defence was overwhelmed in the first 11 minutes of the second half as no fewer than five tries were scored.
Pwllheli’s pace and interlinking between forwards and backs was rewarded as Huw Williams achieved his hat-trick.
He was followed on the score sheet by flanker Alan Roberts, centres Pugh and Gareth Lloyd Williams and second row Pancho Campos, with four of these five tries being majored by Osian Parry Jones.
Pwllheli made changes from the bench, and immediately replacement wing Berwyn Jones used his pace to go over wide out, superbly converted by Parry Jones.
Abergele gave their all, but there was no let up from the ruthless hosts as further tries were scored by centre John Pugh, captain Nick Butterworth, with a brace, and Robin Hughes Jones also with a brace.
All but one of these tries were converted, before the final try came from prop Alwyn Trenholme, who converted his score.
The Conway Land Rover Man of the Match was centre Gareth Lloyd Williams.
The 19 tries scored by Pwllheli in this match has equalled the total of 163 tries for the season by title rivals Nant Conwy, and Pwllheli have one game in hand.
Pwllheli have three matches left and all are away, starting on Saturday at Bala.
The following week they play Mold in their final league game on 6 May, before the Conway Land Rover North Wales Cup Final at Eirias Park on 13 May (3pm).
The Club will be arranging coach travel to each of these three away matches.
• Last weekend’s referee Haydn Owen has announced that he is retiring from officiating this season. He will be missed.
