GARETH Anwyl’s last-gasp try ensured that Llanidloes lifted the Cambrian Training Mid Wales Cup with a thrilling 24-17 final win over Newtown at Cae Hafren.

The encounter had been nip and tuck throughout, before number eight Anwyl touched down from a line-out in the last minute to clinch a dramatic victory in front of the bumper crowd at Llanidloes.

It was the forward’s second try of the match, which capped an enthralling derby match between two teams, who will now come face to face in the North Wales Division Two North next season.

Llanidloes, who reclaimed the trophy they last won two years ago, started the match well, with the reliable boot of Adam Price giving them a six point lead.

Newtown hit back with an unconverted try wide out from Huw Spear, but another good kick from Price saw his side take a 9-5 lead going into the half-time break.

The second half was even stevens, but Llanidloes dug deep to take the silverware despite having two players sin-binned - scrum half Ioan Jones early in the second period, before captain Paul Jehu was yellow carded to miss the last 10 minutes.

A penalty kick from Price made it 12-5 to Llanidloes, but Newtown were on level terms with a converted try from Richard Andrews, converted by John Thurston.

The final now opened up with number eight Gareth Anwyl restoring Llanidloes’ advantage with a close range try, with Price’s conversion effort hitting the post.

Newtown, however, hit back and levelled with Rowan Swanson crossing for an unconverted try with 10 minutes to go.

Llanidloes were reduced to 14 men for the final minutes, but with Newtown’s pressure building, full-back Carwyn Williams’ clearance offered welcome relief.

From the resulting line-out, Llanidloes seized possession with Anwyl charging over for his second try of the game, which was converted by Price, to claim vicitory.

• COBRA seconds meanwhile lifted the Cambrian Training Mid Wales Shield after overcoming Welshpool 17-0 - with all their points coming in the opening half.

Nico Williams and Sion Wyn Williams scored tries, both converted by Will Worthington, who landed an early penalty.
