LLANIDLOES kept their flag flying in the Conwy Land Rover North Wales Intermediate Cup with a tense 11-10 quarter-final victory at home to Powys rivals COBRA on Thursday.

There was little between the sides throughout, but a wholehearted Llani held firm to progress to the last four, where they will face a tricky trip to Shotton Steel.

Looking to avenge narrow defeats in both the league and Swalec Bowl, Llanidloes were clearly up for the challenge and they made a strong start, taking the lead with a penalty goal from Adam Price.

Putting their bodies on the line, they proved a force at the breakdown, but the visitors levelled with a penalty from Will Worthington before Llani restored their three-point advantage before half-time with a second Price penalty, despite having second row Dave Pugh yellow-carded.

Back to 15 players in the second period, the hosts continued to dig deep, with some resolute defence, and extended the lead with a try from hooker Ieuan Phillips who pounced on a loose ball after disrupting a COBRA scrum five metres from the line.

Price, however, failed to add the extra points with his conversion hitting the post.

The Meifod visitors had lacked the finishing touch, but they finally crossed the line in the latter stages of the game as No 8 Jack Jukes sliced through the defence to score a well taken try, with replacement Rhodri Jones adding the conversion.

It was all too late for the visitors, however, as a wholehearted Llanidloes held on to ensure their place in the last four of the competition. Morgan Davies was named Conwy LandRover man-of-the match.

The confirmed semi-final draws are: Conwy Land Rover North Wales Senior Cup: Llangefni v Bala, Pwllheli v Nant Conwy. Conwy Land Rover North Wales Senior Plate: Caernarfon v Bro Ffestiniog. Llandudno v Ruthin. Conwy Land Rover North Wales Intermediate Cup: Shotton v Llanidloes, Denbigh v Teirw Nant. Conwy Land Rover Intermediate Plate: Abergele v Newtown, Llangollen v Bangor.
