MACHYNLLETH ended a tough season on a high by lifting the Cambrian Training Mid Wales Shield with a 19-12 victory over COBRA Seconds at Llanidloes.

Despite having to pull out of the Swalec division two north after struggling for numbers, the club was determined to continue in the Mid Wales competition.

Despite having to reshuffle their back line, with forwards playing out of position, they finally got some reward by lifting the trophy at a sunny Caw.

They always led, with three penalties from fly half Steffan Price giving them a 9-0 advantage, before COBRA reduced the arrears before half time with centre Matthew Jones racing over for a try under the posts, with Rhodri Davies converting.

Another Price penalty made it 12-7 to Mach after the interval, with replacement prop Dylan Jones - making a rare appearance this season - then going over for his side’s only try, and Price also converted.

COBRA replied with a try from hooker James Thomas, but Mach held firm to ensure some end of season celebrations.

Boosted by their success, the club now plan a recruitment drive during the summer, and are hoping to resume in the Swalec division three north next season.

The main prize, the Mid Wales Cup, was won by Aberystwyth University who overcame Llandrindod Wells 18-5.
