PWLLHELI made it three wins from three in Division One North as they came through for a determined 47-15 win over Llangefni at Parc Bodegroes.
Despite the earlier heavy downpours the pitch was in excellent condition, with a gusty cross-field wind, and from the kick-off Pwllheli launched a long range attack which culminated in centre Deio Brunelli scoring under the goal posts. Osian Parry Jones added the extra points.
Within minutes Llangefni were awarded a penalty as Pwllheli dived over in a ruck and their fly half Colin Milburn duly slotted the kick to reduce the arrears.
Llangefni used their hefty pack effectively, particularly in the set pieces, whilst Pwllheli were faster to the loose ball and only good tackling and occasional indifferent passing kept them at bay. The referee was able to maintain the momentum of the game, and only whistled when advantage was not playable.
With full back Arwel Thomas countering whenever possible, the pressure on the visiting team increased, and newcomer Ieuan Williams at centre took advantage of eight phases of play before breaking through on the right to beat the cover, and cross over for an unconverted try.
Both teams continued to give their all, and on the half-time whistle the home team were holding a 14-3 advantage. The third quarter of the match saw Pwllheli up their game and they entertained the crowd with open fluent rugby. After only two minutes flanker William Owen crashed over a third try, and Osian Parry Jones slotted the wide angled kick.
Pwllheli turned the screw and maintained the pressure on the visitors, and 10 minutes in Parry Jones finished off a long range corner to score wide out on the right to secure a try bonus point. His touchline conversion was a beauty.
Pwllheli brought on two subs, with prop Rhys Williams coming on for Dave Jones and Carwyn ap Myrddin coming on for his first appearance of the season.
Pwllheli were committed to trying to run the ball and it paid dividends as slick inter-passing gave captain and fly half John Pugh a yard of space, and his pace did the rest. Parry Jones converted.
With the Llyn side earning quick, quality possession, Pwllheli attacked at every opportunity, and 20 minutes in ex-captain Simon Butterworth scored next when he finished off seven phases of tight play, and Jones duly added the conversion.
Carwyn ap Myrddin savoured his return to play even more when his pace took him past the despairing cover to score wide out, and Jones’ effort to secure the extra two points drifted just wide.
The last 10 minutes saw a gutsy fight-back by Llangefni, and they were awarded a penalty for offside - and used it well to secure position. They drove towards the line, and it was number eight Declan Griffiths who crashed over from close range. Milburn added the conversion.
Pwllheli lost second row Tomos Hughes through injury on 36 minutes and Llangefni utilised the disruption to score their second try at the death, with second row Dion Oliver claiming the touchdown
This Saturday’s match sees league leaders Ruthin play second-placed Pwllheli at Parc Bodegroes. The match is sponsored by Firmhelm, Pwllheli. Pwllheli Seconds’ scheduled match against Machynlleth has been postponed, whilst Pwllheli Youths are playing away at Bangor.
