PWLLHELI were in ruthless scoring form as they romped to remarkable 100-0 victory over mid Wales side COBRA in Division One North last weekend.

Notwithstanding the result, COBRA earned the respect of Pwllheli’s players, coaches and knowledgeable supporters.

The visitors had travelled with a side weakened by injuries, with a host of players unavailable, and although they were heavily beaten, the team gave their all until the very end.

The match was played in near perfect conditions, and with the playing surface in superb condition the good sized crowd looked forward to an open fluid match.

It became clear from the opening minutes that Cobra’s pack would be competitive in the loose, but the speedy Pwllheli backs looked dangerous from the outset.

As it was, no one expected the try blitz which totally overwhelmed the visitors.

After six minutes, Pwllheli’s left wing Arwel Thomas was put into space and his pace took him outside the despairing Cobra cover as he touched down wide out. Captain Nick Butterworth slotted a fine conversion, and the floodgates were open.

Pwllheli maintained momentum by keeping the ball live and they probed for weaknesses in visiting team’s defence. On 10 minutes Butterworth capitalised on a dropped off tackle to crash over, but the kick drifted wide of the goal posts.

Thirteen minutes in it was the turn of wing Arwel Thomas to again beat the cover to score a second try, also unconverted.

COBRA tried to match Pwllheli for energy and commitment, but they had no answer to the powerful and speedy backs.

On 19 minutes Kiwi Kalim Klemente crashed through several would-be tacklers to score the fourth, bonus point try. Butterworth’s successful conversion gave the home team a 24-0 advantage.

The onslaught continued as John Pugh added a fifth score, after a well taken interception, with a successful conversion.

COBRA then dug deep, and had some territorial advantage for a short period.

On 32 minutes, however, they succumbed to Pwllheli’s pace and Pugh again touched down, with the kick missed.

Not to be outdone Pwllheli’s pack did well to turn over ball from the bulky visiting forwards in a ruck. Pwllheli’s gifted number eight Tom Parry picked up the loose ball and sprinted 50 metres to score.

On the stroke of half-time John Pugh secured his hat-trick of tries, to take the score at the interval to an emphatic 46-0.

Pwllheli made a raft of substitutions at half time, but the changes did not lessen the pressure on the well-beaten visitors.

Just six minutes into the second half, right wing Mathew Butterworth scored, following a sweeping passing movement. His brother then added the conversion to take Pwllheli past the 50 point mark.

Again Cobra tried to consolidate and they held Pwllheli out for the next 10 minutes, but the floodgates opened again.

Centre Deio Brunelli scored on 15 minutes and Tom Parry notched his second try of the match three minutes later. Butterworth successfully added both kicks.

Sub Robin Hughes Jones then added a brace of tries, before wing Arwel Thomas got his hat-trick after 33 minutes, and Butterworth also added both conversions.

Keleente scored his team’s 15th try of on 35 minutes, and converted his own score.

Then, right at the death, Robin Hughes Jones scored his third try of a remarkable match to take Pwllheli to the 100 points.

On Saturday Pwllheli are at Colwyn Bay, which is always a tough fixture for the Llyn side, and the Bay will be keen to take the scalp of the double champions.

Pwllheli’s Youths were well beaten by an organised and effective Nant Conwy team. Pwllheli pressed for long periods, but Nant’s defence was outstanding.

Pwllheli’s scheduled second team fixture was one of seven postponements in the two second team leagues in North Wales, which will send ring alarm bells for the organisers of North Wales rugby.
