PWLLHELI ran in 17 unanswered tries and Osian Parry Jones had the remarkable feat of kicking 16 successful conversions as they registered a remarkable 117-0 win at basement side Abergele.
Under blue skies, the firm pitch allowed Pwllheli’s backs to get into the game more than of late, and they ruthlessly took advantage.
Just four minutes in, fly half Kalim Kelemete was on hand to support second row Pancho Campos’ inside pass to score under the posts, and wing Parry Jones slotted over the conversion.
Robin Hughes’ Jones, playing at centre, then chose a wonderful line of attack 30 metres out and he crossed the try line unscathed. Parry Jones again added the kick.
Then, as Pwllheli latched on to a loose dropped pass on 17 minutes, Kelemete’s pace beat the despairing cover to score wide out. Parry Jones added an excellent wide angled conversion.
From the kick-off Abergele were awarded a penalty, but their long range kick drifted wide of the posts.
There was parity in the set-pieces but Pwllheli increasingly began to dominate the loose. It was from a quick ruck that scrum half and captain Nick Butterworth found a gap in the Gele defence to crash over for the try bonus point, and Parry Jones again converted.
Abergele lacked nothing in endeavour and commitment, but Pwllheli’s angles of running, added to pace and technique, saw them pull away from the hosts.
Young centre Gareth Lloyd Williams was the next to score when his pack won quick ball on the right. Butterworth passed to Kelemete and his pop pass put Lloyd Williams clear. Jones kicked his fifth conversion.
Pwllheli’s hard-working pack then got some reward for their graft when prop forward Alwyn Trenholme was at the end of a driving maul to touch down.
Three minutes later, No 8 Tom Parry’s pace split the defence to score from 40 metres out, and both tries were successfully converted.
Fly half Kelemte crossed for try number eight, which Parry Jones also slotted for a 56-0 lead at the interval.
Abergele were further rocked by two more tries in the opening four minutes of the second period, as Butterworth and half back partner Kelemete both went over for converted tries.
Pwllheli now decided to make changes as Owain Williams replaced centre Gareth Lloyd Williams, and Bleddyn Hughes also came on, with Butterworth moving to full back to cover for the injured Danial Glyn.
When Tom Parry completed his brace, again converted by Parry Jones, he was taken off and replaced by James Mortimer. Hooker Kevin Morris was replaced by Ioan Jones, and these early changes gave the players some quality game time.
There was no let up in the pace, however, as tries from Kelemete, Owain Williams and Robin Hughes Jones, all converted, made it 98-0.
Abergele heads did not go down, but second row Pancho Campos brought up the century on 70 minutes.
Butterworth got his hat-trick, and Parry Jones kicked his 16th conversion, before replacement scrum half Bleddyn Hughes scored the final try of the game.
