PWLLHELI were crowned champions of the SSE Swalec Division One North after they completed a remarkable run of five away wins to pip long-time leaders Nant Conwy to the post in their final game.
Nothing was assured going into the last match of a long, hard season, and Llanduno themselves were looking for a win that would secure them a top three spot.
For Pwllheli the prize was far greater, but they knew that they had to be close to their best to get the result they needed.
Within a minute the visitors had the opportunity to take the lead with a long distance penalty, but the kick drifted wide - but two minutes later Osian Parry Jones made amends with a successful penalty.
Llandudno, however, drew level three minutes later through full back Ryan Pike.
Pwllheli looked to use a kicking game, but Llandudno’s star player Pike dealt comfortably with most of their kicks.
When the Llandudno cover tried to run from defence on 14 minutes, however, they were chopped down and Pwllheli recycled the ball and switched it left. Quick hands put centre Dafydd Anwyl in the clear and he beat the cover to touch down.
Both teams tried to move the ball wide, but the tackling was precise and bone jarring. Then, on 25 minutes, Pwllheli again used recycled ball well, and setting up a driving maul some 20 metres out, number eight Tom Parry crashed over for a try.
The successful conversion by wing Osian Parry Jones took Pwllheli 12 points up, and better was to come for the Llyn side as Jones slotted a penalty from half way.
Llandudno took the fight to Pwllheli, and the visitors then lost fly half John Pugh, who was yellow-carded for what was deemed to be a deliberate knock on.
The hosts reduced the arrears with a penalty by Pike, who had the final say of the half with another kick, to take the half time score to Llandudno 9 Pwllheli 18.
Llandudno rattled Pwllheli with a powerful start to the second half, and they soon reduced the deficit to only two points with a try by their wing Huw Griffith, with Pike’s conversion successful.
With the game now flowing, both sides had periods of ascendancy. Osian Parry Jones gave his side some breathing space with another penalty, but the respite was short lived, as Pike also slotted a penalty.
Three minutes later, Pwllheli succumbed to a forward drive by the beefy Llandudno pack, with flanker Bobbi Davies touching down for the try, and the excellent conversion by Pike put his side 26-21 ahead.
Pwllheli, however, responded positively and Osian Parry Jones slotted a penalty.
Then on 28 minutes a slick passing move put fly half John Pugh clear, and he cut through to score under the posts, with Jones then duly adding the conversion.
Four minutes later Pwllheli’s forwards put in a powerful thrust down the centre of the pitch. The ball was released to centre Dafydd Anwyl, who scythed through to score his second and bonus point score.
Osian Parry Jones took the score to 38-26 to the visitors with his successful conversion, but Llandudno were still not done.
On 38 minutes a delicate cross kick found Pike on the right wing, and he took the ball well and touched down, before converting his try to reduce the deficit to only five points - to set up a nervy finish.
Pwllheli, however, kept their focus and the final whistle sparked the celebrations for their players, officials and supporters after a truly stunning end to the season.
