PWLLHELI completed their remarkable charge to the top by registering a fifth successive away win to reclaim the Swalec Division One North title in Llandudno last weekend.
It was a stunning climax to a remarkable campaign, with the defending champions, urged on by several hundred faithful supporters, getting the win they needed to overhaul Nant Conwy and claim league honours for a second successive season.
“When Pwllheli played Nant Conwy at Bodegroes on April 16, they knew that they had to win the match, and that any aspirations for the title would mean a daunting series of five consecutive away matches,” said chairman Will Martin.
“Nant had a 23-point lead in the league, and their try count was considerably better than Pwllheli’s at that stage - but Pwllheli beat Nant on the day and we won our next four away matches, all played within three weeks, with try bonus points.”
After Nant had beaten Bethesda in midweek with a bonus point win, nothing less than a clear win for Pwllheli at Llandudno would have been enough to win the title.
At the end of a gruelling 80 minutes, however, it was Pwllheli who secured the coveted Division One North title, to the delight of everyone involved at the club.
“The magnitude of this fight back should not be underestimated,” added Martin.
“Pwllheli’s last five away games saw them score some 181 points and 23 tries to get a season’s total of 88 touchdowns.
“To overhaul a team of Nant’s calibre and secure successive league titles is to the huge credit of the players and coaches.”
Martin added: “This was a match worthy of being a Championship decider.
“For the neutral it was an excellent advert for community rugby, and for the partisan supporters of both teams it was a nail biting and very tense experience.
“Many people have played their part in Pwllheli’s succcess, including the two team managers Bill Parry and Robin Elias.
“Credit must also go to Edwin Jones, who does the First Aid, and the patient Ken Davies for rescheduling game after game over the length of the season.”
