THE RACE for the Division Two North West title is hotting up, with only a single point separating the top three sides after Dolgellau amassed 13 tries at the Marian to keep the pressure on leaders Llangefni with an 81-0 win over Menai Bridge.
Bridge, with only a bare 15 players available, kept Dolgellau in check for the first quarter, as winger Rob Pugh’s try and Gerwyn Thomas’ conversion were the only scores separating the two sides.
From there on in, however, the tries kept coming at regular intervals as prop Greg Smithies, centre Dylan Evans with a brace, skipper Gerwyn Thomas, scrum half Jac Roberts and centre Gareth Hughes all crossed the whitewash for the hosts.
The pick of these tries was centre Dylan Evans’ first score, as Thomas’ perfect chip ahead was gathered by winger Rob Pugh to put him through for a great score.
Thomas was accurate with six conversions, to put them 47-0 ahead at the break.
A break by Bridge centre Dave Williams was the closest they came to scoring.
After left wing Dafydd Elis had crossed for Dolgellau’s first try of the second half, the home side made changes, with Danny Evans, Henri Roberts, Owain Thomas, Geraint Evans and Dan Brazier coming on, and five further tries were scored.
A Jac Roberts chip ahead was gleefully gathered by younger brother Henri, who sprinted home, and prop Dan Brazier added the conversion for a 59-0 lead.
Winger Dafydd Elis scored a fine individual effort to cross for Dolgellau’s 10th try, his second, to cap a fine performance.
Despite some heroic defending, especially from visiting No 8 and skipper Olly O’Brien, Dolgellau finished in style, with winger Rob Pugh scoring his second.
Hooker Geraint Evans also crashed over, and the pick of the second half tries came from flanker Iwan Pugh, following some nice inter-passing between skipper Gerwyn Thomas and youngster Henri Roberts. Dan Brazier added one further conversion to round off Dolgellau’s scoring.
