TREGARON’s home match against Pontyberem was a fantastic game of rugby football for the neutral supporter - with a total of 13 tries being scored as the visitors ran out 58-24 winners in their Division Two West encounter.

The fantastic surface of the Tregaron School field was ideal for Ponty’s brand of open rugby, and within minutes of the start the ball was moved wide by the visitors’ back line and when the ball was recycled, Adrian Williams the right winger crossed for the opening try in the corner.

From the kick-off the home forwards won some possession, and after a series of drives an overlap was created, which centre Nigel Jones took full advantage of and he went over for his team’s first try.

The Tregaron forwards were equal to their counterparts, and the contact area was keenly contested. The visitors’ backline were electric, however, as they used quick ball to set up a stream of attacks.

The first time tackling of the hosts at times was lacking, but the skill set of their opponents really was a treat to watch.

Pontyberem scored tries through centres Andrew Kirkbridge and Will Jarvis as they finished off two slick movements.

Mike Sauro converted one and kicked a penalty to make it 5-20 after 25 minutes.

Tregaron bounced back with a second try, and this time it was the forwards who forced themselves over the white-wash from close quarters, and it was captain Dorian Pugh who came up with the ball.

Prior to the interval, the visitors extended their lead once more with two further tries, one by scrum half Rhodri Jones and a second score for Adrian Williams.

At the interval, the scoreline appeared to show a one-sided game, but this was not the case as the game had flown from end to end, and had been competitive.

Immediately after the restart, the Gwendraeth Valley team scored again, this time it was Mike Sauro who finished off a set move, and he converted his own try.

A seventh try for the visitors was scored by full back Wayne Williams as he glided through to cross under the sticks, and the conversion for Sauro was a formality.

The last 20 minutes belonged to the Ceredigion team, however, as their forwards gained some ascendency. No 8 Rhydian Davies, who was the hosts’ best player, forced himself after a number of phases, and Llion Jones also converted.

The biggest cheer of the afternoon then came as the bonus point try was scored by Tregaron. An excellent kick ahead was missed by a few players, but winger Gethin Jones pounced on the ball to score, and Llion Jones converted once more.

Ponty’s scoring wasn’t finished as they finished off the game with two further tries - both by right winger Wayne Williams - as his co-backs showed their skills once more, and Sauro added the extras.
