AN elderly couple are said to have had a lucky escape after their car ploughed into the harbour wall at Aberaeron on Monday of last week.

The couple, who are believed to have been visiting the area, were treated by paramedics at the scene after their car collided with the harbour wall near the harbourmaster’s office at Doc Bach.

The woman was subsequently taken by ambulance to Aberystwyth’s Bronglais Hospital suffering from pelvis, hip, knee and suspected internal injuries.

“When I arrived at the scene the car was in the wall with its engine still running,” one onlooker told the Cambrian News.

“I was told the car was an automatic and there was speculation that the driver had hit the throttle by mistake instead of the brake causing it to leap forward.

“The accident triggered a huge response – along with paramedics, firefighters from New Quay and Aberaeron were on the scene together with five police vehicles.

“Had the car gone through the wall and plunged into the harbour the consequences don’t bear thinking about.”

A Dyfed-Powys Police spokesperson later described the couple’s condition as “stable”.
