ONLOOKERS watched with concern when a pregnant woman’s waters appeared to break following a four-vehicle crash on the A487.
Three ambulances, three police cars and two fire crews from Aberystwyth and Aberaeron were called to respond to the collision between two passing cars and two stationary cars at Llanon at around 4.50pm on Saturday.
One woman involved in the crash was out of her vehicle prior to the arrival of firefighters, and fire crews assisted two other women out of their vehicle, before all three were transported to Bronglais Hospital, Aberystwyth.
Cllr Bryan Tomlins, of Llansantffraid Community Council, witnessed the crash and said: “One lady was pregnant. It appears her waters broke due to the accident and she was taken to Bronglais, with others following later.”
A hospital spokesman said this week they could not give details about the woman’s condition.
Firefighters made the vehicles safe using small firefighting gear before leaving the scene at 6.01pm.
Cllr Tomlins has now called on the Welsh Government — which has responsibility for all trunk roads in Wales — to do something about the traffic situation in Llanon, where cars line the road, making it difficult for vehicles to pass each other.
Cllr Tomlins said: “People park their vehicles on or close to the junction with Stryd yr Eglwys and, in so doing, restrict drivers if they need to take avoiding action.
“The community council has been complaining about vehicles parking on junctions fronting onto the A487 Trunk road through the village to the Trunk Road Agency over a number years, but no action has as yet been taken.”
A police spokesman said: “At approximately 4.50pm on Saturday 24 October, police received reports of a four-vehicle RTC on the A487 in Bridge Street, Llanon.
“Vehicles were a silver Volkswagen Golf, a red Hyundai i10, a brown Vauxhall Zafira and a silver Mitsubishi Colt. The casualties were taken to Bronglais Hospital by ambulance. The road was clear by approximately 7.40pm.”
