Holidaymakers in Llanrhystud had a lucky escape when a fire destroyed a caravan.

Two fire engines attended from Aberystwyth and Aberaeron to battle the blaze at the Pengarreg Holiday Park that left the touring caravan razed to the ground.

The blaze, which happened at around 11am on Sunday, 2 June, is thought to have been a generator fire and could have affected nearby caravans if the wind had been blowing in the other direction.

Witness Howard Parry said the direction the wind was blowing meant that flames and smoke had been blown out to sea, saving nearby caravans from being affected.

Mr Parry said nobody was hurt during the fire, but the situation could have been a lot worse if weather conditions had not been as they were.

He said: “The smoke and flames were huge.

“It burnt the caravan down to the ground.

“They had a generator which went up in flames.

“It was close to other caravans, but the way the wind was blowing, it was blowing the flames and smoke out toward the seas. It was very lucky.

“The flames and smoke were 100 feet up in the air.

“The good thing about it was that nobody was hurt.”

“The fire must have started and they got out of the caravan,” he added. “It was an older couple.

“There was a caravan to the left and to the right, so it could have been a lot worse.”
