Bro

CONSIDERING the bad weather, there was a good attendance of Bro members for the November meeting of the English Section of Cymdeithas Bro Ffestiniog where Peter Sidebottom introduced the guest speaker Peredur Hughes from Porthmadog who is an amateur industrial historian at the the Llanberis Slate Museum. His subject of the evening was “Slate Yards from Bangor to Blaenau” and his talk covered slate manufacturing during the early nineteenth centenary with different companies being set up in the said area producing various slate products from ridge tiles, fire places, monuments and very much in demand the slate writing tablets and pens used in schools. The talk was illustrated by excellent old photos from the archives. The speaker was thanked by Peter Sidebottom for a most interesting evening and the members showed their appreciation. The next meeting will be on 11 February when Stephen ap Owain will give a talk on ‘The Big Tunnel’, that being the one from Blaenau Ffestiniog to Roman Bridge.
