THE National Centre for Learning Welsh has announced at the Eisteddfod y Garreg Las that Jackie Willmington from Bow Street has received the Aled Roberts Memorial Award.

The award is presented annually by the centre in memory of Aled Roberts, the politician and former Welsh Language Commissioner, to a volunteer who has made a significant contribution to the Learn Welsh sector.

Jackie learned Welsh herself, before using the language in her daily work as a vet at the Veterinary Research Centre in Aberystwyth.

Over the years, she has supported others on their journey to learn the language by organising all kinds of social activities including guided walks, reading clubs, and summer courses.

She is a keen supporter of the National Centre for Learning Welsh's ‘Siarad’ scheme, and plays a key role in Clwb CYD Aberystwyth, Cymdeithas Edward Llwyd, and Cymdeithas y Penrhyn, helping to create regular opportunities for learners to use Welsh locally.

Dona Lewis, Chief Executive of the National Centre for Learning Welsh, said; “Jackie is an inspiring example of someone who has both mastered the Welsh language, and is now using that language to enrich her community and to help others gain confidence.

“Jackie has made an outstanding voluntary contribution to the Learn Welsh sector and to the Welsh-speaking community in the Aberystwyth area.
