A FORMER Penweddig pupil has been named head of news at BBC Cymru Wales.

Garmon Rhys will lead the development of all news and current affairs services across online, mobile, radio and television.

Originally from Aberystwyth, Garmon began his journalism career at the BBC in 2000, before working as a television and radio producer in a range of roles across political and current affairs output.

For three years he led strategy development and planning across BBC Wales, before rejoining the news department as deputy head in 2012 to oversee political, specialist and Welsh language journalism.

Rhodri Talfan Davies, director BBC Wales, said: “Garmon is a highly respected journalist and creative leader - and has played a central role in the development of our news output over a number of years. With the speed of change in the news market, and the unprecedented political and social agenda, I believe he is ideally placed to shape the future direction of our journalism.”

Garmon added: “I am delighted to have been asked to lead BBC Cymru Wales’ news and current affairs services. At a time of enormous change, I am looking forward to working closely with our remarkable team of journalists across Wales to ensure we do everything possible to reach out to audiences of all ages in all parts of our nation.”
