THE official opening of Aberystwyth’s new tourist information centre will be held in September – although the new facility is likely to be open from July.
Work is almost complete on the new facility, which will act as a new entrance to Ceredigion Museum. There will also be a café and shop.
While the new attraction is likely to be open next month, Ceredigion County Council Cabinet members have ruled that the official opening will be delayed until September to allow the new services “to settle in” and so any issues can be resolved following the renovation work.
It has also been agreed that council chief executive Bronwen Morgan, who will retire in September, will officially open the new facility.
The £1.3m scheme, which has attracted funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and saw the council provide funding from the sale of Lisburne House, the former TIC, has been hailed as an important step for the museum in helping to make it more accessible to the public.
Russell Hughes Pickering, the council’s head of performance and economy, said: “This building project will leave the existing Grade II listed Coliseum more or less as it is, but work on making it more accessible and welcoming, with a new ground-floor presence taking over from the current steep red steps."
