The Aberystwyth branch of Santander is not among those affected after the Spanish-owned bank announced the closure of 140 branches.

Santander said on Wednesday it plans to close nearly one in five of its bank branches in the UK, putting more than 1,200 jobs at risk.

The branch on Great Darkgate Street is not among those listed for closure, and will be one of the 614 Santander branches left in the country.

Santander said branch transaction numbers have fallen by 23 per cent over the past three years, while online transactions almost doubled. The company said branches “still have a vital role” in its plans, and expected its current branches to “remain stable for the foreseeable future.”
