Politicians have published an open letter to Barclays calling on the bank to continue to provide face-to-face branch services in Porthmadog.
Following Barclays’ announcement that Porthmadog will close on 25 February, Cllr Nia Jeffreys, MP Liz Saville Roberts and MS Mabon ap Gwynfor have launched an open letter lobbying the bank to retain services in the town.
Cllr Jeffreys said: “I’m disappointed with Barclays’ recent announcement to close the bank in Porthmadog. As our communities recover from the effects of Covid, face-to-face services should be retained to support vulnerable people in vulnerable communities.
“Bringing banking services to an end in Porthmadog will have an adverse and far-reaching impact on charities and community groups in the area who often rely on cash. I urge people to add their name to the open letter.”
MP Liz Saville Roberts said she disagrees with Barclays’ advice that customers should move to online banking because not everybody has access to a reliable internet connection.
“Many older people are also reluctant to use the internet for any financial matters,” she said. “Ending banking services in Porthmadog will have an adverse impact on businesses and individuals.”
MS Mabon ap Gwynfor said: “Banks have been ripped out of our towns at an astounding rate, which shows no regard for the people who have helped banks make huge profits. Barclays has already shut 63 branches this year.”
A Barclays spokesperson said: “The decision to close a branch is never an easy one. However, customers are increasingly using alternatives to branches to do their banking. As a result, we are seeing a sustained fall in branch visits across the UK.
“This is reflected at the Porthmadog where there has been a 13 per cent reduction in counter transactions. In addition, 81 per cent of our customers at the branch are also using different ways to bank. We will work with our customers and provide alternative options to ensure they can continue to manage their money and receive financial expertise when required.”
