THE mayor of Cardigan has spoken of his shock after people in Wales and the UK voted to leave the EU.

Giving his reaction to the Brexit camp’s shock victory last week, Cllr Clive Davies said the majority of Cardigan residents clearly appreciated how the town had benefited from an injection of EU cash over the past decade.

The newly-reopened Cardigan Castle, Theatr Mwldan, Small World Theatre and business group Menter Aberteifi are just some of the projects which received funding from Brussels from 2006 to 2016.

“Just take a stroll around Cardigan and the benefits of EU cash are there for all to see,” said Cllr Davies.

A spokesperson for Cardigan Castle said the Cadwgan Trust received £5m of European grants to match-fund the Heritage Lottery Fund.

“Without this money the castle project could not have gone ahead,” she added.

Castle facilities officer Sue Lewis said: “We are grateful to all our funders, but the HLF and Wales European Funding Office were the bedrock of the castle restoration. We simply could not have carried out the project without their support. If we were starting the castle campaign today it would be a very different funding landscape.”
