A SCHEME aimed at cutting the use of plastic carrier bags is being launched in Machynlleth with volunteers making bags that shops can lend to shoppers.
The Dyfi Benthyg Bag, or Borrow a Bag, scheme has already signed up local shops including Dyfi Wholefoods, Deco and the Co-op in Machynlleth and Idris Stores in Corris and will see bags made by volunteers from old T-shirts and materials available to be borrowed from shops involved.
The scheme will be officially launched tomorrow with a special event at St Peter’s Church in Machynlleth between 2pm and 6pm making bags that can be used under the scheme.
Jane Rigby, the co-ordinator of the scheme, said it was hoped it would help reduce the use of plastic bags by being available to shoppers who may have forgotten to take bags or need a bag unexpectedly.
She said: “We’re making bags from old T-shirts and materials.
“We give them to shops who can then lend them out to people who need them at the till.
“Just borrow and bring back next time you’re out – to any participating shop.
“Our launch day is Thursday, 26 April, when all are welcome to join us, having fun and sharing skills making simple bags.
“Bring a sewing machine and/or scrap materials if you can, but everything will be provided if you can’t.
“Clean old T-shirts or materials may be donated to Mair at Blodyn Tatws in the Owain Glyndwr Centre in Machynlleth, who will pass them on."
Anyone who would like to take part in the scheme can contact Jane on 07771 590883 or Liz Lavelle on 07805 000074.
