BUSINESSES in and around Terrace Road in Aberystwyth have said that month-long roadworks are “killing trade”.
Contractors arrived on site in early March and began ripping up the surface of Terrace Road from the corner of Portland Street to the corner of North Parade.
The road remained closed to traffic over the busy Easter bank holiday weekend, with the work to reconstruct the highway expected to continue until 11 May.
Up-in-arms traders in the area have said the works have seen business drop by over 75 per cent, with businesses missing out on the vital Easter holiday trade, as well as losing footfall from passing trade as pedestrians struggle to navigate the barriers.
Basil Coates who owns and runs GB Fishing on the corner of Terrace Road and Corporation Street said the work has been a “disaster” for local businesses.
“My business is down 75 per cent and I know that many businesses along this stretch are in a similar boat,” he told the Cambrian News.
“People are absolutely hopping mad about this.
“We were given no warning that the work would happen, they just turned up one day.
“It is a ridiculous situation to put businesses in, and work has still not finished.
“Deliveries cannot get in, people struggle to walk with the barriers, and the place looks ugly."
Ceredigion County Council, who said it is “hopeful” that the closure “will be lifted before the end of the week”, said the “blockwork paving surface on Terrace Road between Bath Street and North Parade has been deteriorating”, and the area was “in need of remedial works”.
