The Cambrian News has been named the best weekly newspaper in Wales at an awards ceremony in Cardiff.

The Cambrian News was one of three shortlisted newspapers battling it out for the title of Weekly Newspaper of the Year 2019 in the Wales Media Awards.

The winners were announced at a gala dinner in Cardiff last Friday, which brought together the top names in the media in Wales to celebrate the country’s journalistic excellence. The competition raised money for the Journalists’ Charity.

The Cambrian News was up against the County Times and Western Telegraph for the award in the weekly newspaper of the year category sponsored by Western Power Distribution. Newspapers had to submit three editions from 2018 and the Cambrian News entry highlighted the devastating fire on Aberystwyth promenade, the resignation of an AM found with indecent images on his computer, a mum inspired to write after the tragic loss of her son, family tributes after a tragic crash, a daughter’s battle to get earlier screening for bowel cancer after her dad’s terminal diagnosis, the Aberystwyth promenade lease battle, and lots more.

Judges said the Cambrian News was “a good example of the truly great local newspapers in Wales”.

They went on to say: “When a local newspaper splashes with a devastating hotel fire – and headlines an AM resigning over indecent images and a groom bitten by a guest on his wedding day – you know you’re off to a flyer.

“The Cambrian News has a symbiotic relationship with its readers and serves comprehensive coverage of local courts and councils, campaigns, people stories and local events.”
