CEREDIGION County Council has been named the best large employer in Wales at an awards event.

The local authority won the major award for its commitment to developing employees’ digital literacy, and was named the best large employer in Wales at this year’s Inspire! Awards.

The council worked closely with trade union UNISON’s DigiSkills Cymru WULF Project and local learning provider Dysgu Bro Ceredigion to enable more than 100 members of staff, such as care home and waste management workers who have not previously used computers in their day-to-day work, to develop their basic digital skills.

The training was aimed at addressing their basic digital skills needs including how to switch on a PC and tablet, how to connect to wifi and common computer terminology.

The council released staff and rearranged shift patterns so that employees from across the county could attend the training.

The Inspire! Awards are hosted each year ahead of Adult Learners’ Week to celebrate the achievements of outstanding learners in Wales who have shown exceptional passion, commitment and drive for learning; often in the face of difficult circumstances, as well as employers who champion learning in the workplace.

Denise Owen, community education manager at Ceredigion County Council, said: “As a council, we’ve nominated workers for the Inspire! Awards in the past but to receive a nomination for our own work really is something else. The fact that we’ve actually gone on to win is amazing!"
