LOCAL hoteliers have voiced concerns over plans to build a new 66-bedroom Premier Inn.
Cllr Nia Jeffreys told the Cambrian News this week that, although most people in Porthmadog were “very supportive” of the plans to open a £6m Premier Inn at the Ty Moelwyn site, some residents and hotel owners had raised worries over the plans.
She said there were fears over where people would park, noise during construction of the new hotel, and the adverse effect the hotel may have on existing hotels and guest houses in the region.
Cllr Jeffreys said: “They welcome the new jobs, extra bedroom capacity in the town and the development of the site. A small number of people have raised concerns but most stress that despite these concerns they do not object to the development. Understandably some small bed and breakfast businesses fear the proposed hotel will damage their business. They ask what market research the company have done to ensure there is enough demand in the Porthmadog area to sustain the hotel and current businesses?
“Parking is another concern raised by residents of Britannia Terrace, Britannia Place and Surveyors Place. Parking is already difficult in this area of Porthmadog.
“Other residents are very concerned that there is not enough parking for all the guests and staff at the proposed hotel and that this will lead to extra cars parking in the area. Residents have suggested a space for each house to park in a segregated area of the new car park. I would support this and strongly urge further consultation with residents on the issue of parking.”
