Hopes of a new 24-hour cash machine for Machynlleth have stalled after plans lodged with Powys County Council were withdrawn ahead of being resubmitted.
A planning application had been made to the council for a new ATM to be installed at the Mr News shop on Penrallt Street, but agents Sigma ATM Group have now withdrawn that application after the plans fell foul of a council built heritage officer.
However, Sigma ATM have said they will resubmit a new planning application with further information shortly.
The delay has been met with dismay by local councillor Michael Williams who said it was vital that the town had an accessible cashpoint.
Cllr Williams said: “It is frustrating for the townspeople and I’m sure very frustrating for visitors as well. I really do hope that matters can move forward.
“It is absolutely crucial for Machynlleth, and indeed any other town without banks, that people have access to a cashpoint.
"While I understand the increase of online banking, it’s absolutely crucial that people have access to ready cash.”
Cllr Williams said with a range of popular events in Machynlleth such as the Comedy Festival and Dyfi Enduro, the need for a cashpoint was even more pressing.
He said: “We have festivals and events, and I congratulate the organisers of those events for their hard work, that bring a lot of people to Machynlleth.”
