THE last rounds will be played on Dolgellau’s golf course this month, it has been confirmed.

Dolgellau Golf Club, which has a nine-hole golf course established in 1910, has not been able to find a new buyer, even at a reduced fee, and will close its doors as this year’s memberships run out on 31 March.

The closure will draw a curtain down on more than a century of sporting tradition in Dolgellau.

Plans have already been proposed to turn the club house into three holiday homes.

Cllr Bob Gunton said, when the plans were put before Dolgellau Town Council this month, that the holiday homes will have “an amazing garden”.

The course, skirted by both the Mawddach Estuary and Cader Idris, was on the market for over £900,000, but owner Richard Stockdale reduced this by over £100,000 in a bid to keep the golf course open.

Members had also tried to raise funds to keep the club open, but to no avail.

Mr Stockdale, who is a PGA professional, has been at the club for 13 years after buying the golf course and proceeding to build a new club house with changing rooms, a bar and function room that can cater for parties of 120 people.

Mr Stockdale said: “Closing Dolgellau Golf Club has been a long and hard decision with many contributing factors. I would like to thank everyone who has supported the club whilst under my ownership.”
