Ceredigion County Council will hand over a small parcel of land to improve car parking provision at one of Aberystwyth’s most famous attractions, if the Cabinet give the scheme the go-ahead.
The Cabinet have been asked to approve a recommendation to provide the Cliff Railway on Constitution Hill with a car park extension for more disabled spaces to improve access.
The plan is part of a wider scheme to improve the attraction - the longest funicular electric cliff railway in Britain, opened in 1896.
Cabinet member for economy and regeneration Cllr Rhodri Evans’ report to cabinet on 27 November outlines that the company in charge of the railway has made a request for more land to “upgrade and extend the parking facilities for disabled users”.
The Cliff Railway Company leases the site at Constitution Hill from the council, with a small car park and booking office at the lower level and railway structure and associated facilities above.
The new lease for the extra parcel of land will mean the car park can be extended to provide additional Blue Badge parking and is part of a “larger scheme of works to improve accessibility to the attraction as a whole”.
The Cabinet report adds: “It is understood that significant funding has been obtained in order to bring these improvements to fruition which will ultimately increase the use of the attraction.”
The extra parcel of land at the foot of Constitution Hill off Brynymor Road is currently unused.
