Ongoing work to expand an Aberystwyth supermarket will now include electric car charging points after the go ahead was given to alter the plans.

Work has begun to expand the Lidl store into the former Iceland store next door on the Rheidol Retail Park, almost doubling the size of the store to 1,300 square metres.

Those plans were approved by Ceredigion County Council planners under delegated powers in 2020 and will see new extensions to the front and rear, with work also being carried out on the current car park.

The supermarket giants had subsequent plans approved last week for the addition of two electric car charging points along with a customer toilet which were not part of the original plans.

The new electric car charging spaces would mean the loss of one regular space, the company said, but “considered that the provision of a sustainable parking facility outweighs the loss.”

Lidl, which has temporarily moved into the former Store 21 site at the front of the park while work on its new store has finished, said that new jobs would be created as part of the scheme.

Iceland has since moved into two units on the Ystwyth Retail Park.

Lidl owns the whole of the Rheidol Retail Park after agreeing an £8m deal for the freehold at the beginning of 2020.

The newly agreed additions will also see a utility room and plant area added to the original scheme.
