JUST 455 people are claiming out-of-work benefits in Ceredigion as the labour market in the county remains “buoyant”.

New figures show the county has the second-lowest proportion of its economically active population claiming job seekers allowance – or its equivalent through universal credit – in Wales, at just one per cent, second only to Powys (0.9 per cent).

The figures represent a total reduction of 25 claimants on the previous month, and Shân Gwyn, the former manager of Ceredigion Jobcentre who now manages Carmarthen Jobcentre, paid tribute to the opportunities available in the county.

Ms Gwyn said: “Nationally the employment rate is at a record high of 74.9 per cent. Official figures released today show the unemployment rate has fallen to 4.5 per cent, the lowest rate since 1975.

“This positive picture is also reflected in Ceredigion with only 455 people currently claiming JSA or looking for work on universal credit.”

“We have been continuing to support numerous local and national employers with their recruitment needs throughout the county and it is pleasing to report that the current labour market remains buoyant with opportunities available within many different sectors,” she added.
