A PEST company was called in to a Porthmadog supermarket after a customer claimed she saw a rat.

Bethan Wyn Lane-Matthew, from Penrhyndeudraeth, said she was shopping with her nephew at the Tesco supermarket in the town when both saw the pest.

Bethan told the Cambrian News that she reported the sighting to a member of staff who told her it was most likely a bird, rather than a rat.

She said: “We called in to get some dog food and all of a sudden we saw a rat running between the aisles.

“My nephew saw it twice! We then told a member of staff and they asked us if we were sure it wasn’t a bird but I know it was a rat, it ran across the aisle and jumped. ”

Tesco has confirmed that a pest control company was brought in to the store, but found no evidence of the pest.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We are committed to ensuring our stores meet the highest standards of cleanliness, so when our customer made us aware of this sighting we increased the amount of checks and arranged for a pest control company to visit the store. The pest control company has found no evidence of any activity, but is continuing to monitor the Porthmadog store as a precaution.”
