A BEACHSIDE café in Aberaeron could be given a new lease of life.

Dating back to the 1960s, North Beach kiosk is located at the corner of the school playing fields, off Lower Regent Street, adjoining the coastal path.

The café has in recent years been let on a seasonal basis, with the toilets retained for public use and managed by the council.

Now county council cabinet members are being asked to market the property so that it can be redeveloped to make more use of the seafront location.

Giving her reaction to the proposals, local county councillor Elizabeth Evans said: “I have long believed that there is huge potential at this site to develop something very exciting and I am pleased the Cabinet paper recognises the opportunity to maximise the business opportunity this fantastic location offers.

“I am pleased that the paper before Cabinet does not relinquish ownership of the site as that is something I could not support.

“It is very important that the current tenant is kept updated on developments and treated with the utmost respect.”

“The site does benefit from being close to the nearby public car park and adjoining coastal path for ease of access,” stated the report.

“Any redevelopment would need to provide new toilets for public use (if the service requires this arrangement to be continued) and the responsibility could be transferred to the tenant in occupation, reducing the costs incurred by the council.

“However, this option may well reduce the income received in lieu of this additional responsibility."
