PLANS to close Aberystwyth’s historic post office were roundly condemned at a public meeting last week.

Politicians and councillors from across the political spectrum joined residents at the meeting in the Morlan Centre to rail against the plans to relocate the post office on Great Darkgate Street, with the possible loss of seven jobs.

The meeting, attended by dozens of concerned residents, also heard of uncertainty surrounding the sorting office in Tregaron.

Mark Williams MP, Cllr Ceredig Davies, Cllr Alun Williams, Cllr Mark Strong, Liberal Democrat Assembly candidate Cllr Elizabeth Evans, Labour Assembly candidate Iwan Wyn Jones, Ceredigion Plaid Cymru AM and Assembly candidate Elin Jones and Aberystwyth mayor Cllr Dr Endaf Edwards, Lynn Simpson from the CWU, Baroness Eluned Morgan Labour’s Mid and West Wales Assembly candidate and Green Party Assembly candidate Brian Williams all expressed concerns over the plans, which have been the subject of a petition signed by hundreds.

Calls were made last month for Crown Post Offices to reconsider its position on Aberystwyth’s post office - one of 39 throughout the UK earmarked for closure as part of an “ongoing review”.

The company said it was seeking to enter into a franchise arrangement with a third party for the running of the Post Office in the town - leaving Aberystwyth’s seven employees facing an uncertain future.
