SUPERMARKET giant Sainsbury’s has shelved plans to open a new store on Cardigan’s Bathhouse site and finally confirmed the land will be put up for sale.

Back in November 2014 it emerged that the Sainsbury’s store – part of a £50m project to include the town’s new integrated health centre – was unlikely to be going ahead.

And Sainbury’s finally confirmed last week that they were pulling out of Cardigan and that the supermarket’s proposed site would now be put back on the market.

“We have not taken this decision lightly and are very disappointed we are not able to open a new shop in Cardigan,” said a spokesman.

“Since the proposals were first announced, shopping patterns have changed considerably and, following a review, the scheme is no longer viable for us.

“We will carry out ground works so that the site is ready for future development.

“Once this is complete we’ll be marketing the land for sale to interested businesses.”
