A MAJOR Dwyfor employer has labelled their decision to lay off 35 staff as a “bold step”.

At the start of April, Cambrian Sovereign, better known as Cambrian Leisure Homes, told more than a quarter of its employees that they were to lose their jobs – albeit temporarily.

The move comes as the company, which produces top-of-the-range holiday lodges, admitted its build quality “has not been as good as it should be” over the last six months and that it is scaling back production to restore standards.

The troubled firm, and its staff of approximately 100 people, was saved from administration in March 2017 following a merger with Sovereign Park & Leisure Homes in Coventry but, a little over a year later, temporary lay offs have been made.

In a recent statement Cambrian Sovereign has stated it has taken a “bold step to concentrate on production quality rather than quantity”. Managing director Vincent McCullagh: “Since Sovereign merged with Cambrian I have dedicated my time looking how we can be the first choice for our customers for High End Lodges and Park Homes.

“We have listened to our customers and in a small number of cases – we have perhaps not met the standards that we set down for ourselves.

“We have a good reputation for quality and customer service and we want to go one step further and be known as the company for exceptional Quality, inspiring Designs and excellent Customer Service in the industry.”

The decision to temporaryily lay off some staff has “not been taken lightly”, the company suggests.

This “pro-active” step has given the company the time to re-train and focus the team on producing the high Quality that Cambrian Sovereign require from their product.

General manager Stephen Crawford added: “Our customers love the product we build, but have noticed ourselves that due to the volume of production some items and timescales had marginally slipped.

“We have therefore taken a pro-active approach with this and have set our sights firmly to rectify this with a small drop in production so that our product and aftercare becomes the highest in the industry.

“We have also put in place a new delivery and siting policy and these services are now completed by qualified contractors who understand and will uphold the quality standard we have set.

“These teams also have been brought on board to eliminate any small aftersales caused during transport, so that the perfect turn-key service can be given.”
