PLASTIC-FREE campaigners in Aberporth are calling on brewery giant Brains to ditch plastic-wrapped biscuits.

The group picked up more than 40 plastic coffee biscuit wrappers during a beach clean of Tresaith – all believed to have blown onto the beach from the nearby Ship Inn.

Plastic-free committee member Sue Lewis said that the group had written to Brains but had received no response.

“While we realise it is a company-wide decision to use these little separately wrapped biscuits in pubs and restaurants throughout Wales, the Ship Inn at Tresaith is in a very sensitive marine location,” she said.

“These wrappers – through no fault of the pub staff – blow onto the beach and then into the sea where they could be eaten by marine life.

“It would be a small but important step to find a different way of serving coffee that doesn’t include these biscuits.”

The group is hoping that Brains – who have recently announced they are not issuing plastic straws – will have a rethink in time for the summer tourist season.

The group – thanks to Aberporth Community Council – will be flying a plastic-free flag on the Aberporth seafront to highlight the message.
