CAMPAIGNERS fighting to save Llandysul’s library have been given three months to draw up plans for taking the facility over.
Ceredigion Cabinet members bowed to pressure from opponents to council closure plans and backed a recommendation from the council’s thriving communities scrutiny committee to give the community time to consider whether they can take over the library.
While Cabinet members had been asked to consider a two-month period to allow the community to draw up plans, Dafydd Edwards, the Cabinet member for information technology and customer services, said he thought a three-month period would be better.
But he admitted the council would look to be flexible if an agreement between the parties was close.
He said: “We do realise the aspect of closing Llandysul library is quite a challenging one. I would suggest a three-month period so we can give them more time in Llandysul to find solutions to the problem.”
Llandysul councillor Peter Evans called instead for a four-month time-frame to allow detailed plans to be drawn up for the library to be taken over as a community trust, after saying the initial scrutiny committee suggestion of two months was too short.
