A number of cars have been crushed by fallen trees at a holiday resort in Gwynedd.

The trees at Portmeirion fell sometime overnight on Wednesday and, according to one eye witness who had been staying there, as many as eight cars have been damaged.

Holidaymaker Rob Fennah was staying at the site and took some dramatic photographs of the damage.

Speaking to the Cambrian News, he said it was surprising no-one was hurt.

“My car wasn’t damaged badly, thankfully, just a couple of scratches, but eight cars had been damaged and I’ve never seen anything like it.

“We heard the wind picking up on Wednesday night and then, in the early hours of Thursday morning, we heard the sound of a chainsaw so we looked out of the window to see what had happened.

“We didn’t realise then quite what had happened, but as branches were removed you could see cars underneath and some of them had literally been flattened.

“I thought we would have heard something like that, a loud bang or something, but we didn’t.”

Mr Fennah, who visits Portmeirion regularly from his home on the Wirral, added: “It’s important to mention that the staff were great, on the ball, cordoning off the area and keeping everyone safe.

“And the most important thing is that no-one was injured.

“If the tree had fallen the other way it would have landed on the cottages.”

Portmeirion has been asked to comment.
