A BOW Street man will try to build a house from scratch in 24 hours as part of a TV show to be shown tonight.

In Amazing Spaces Special: 24 Hour Build, Carwyn Lloyd Jones joins presenter George Clarke and a team of builders to take on the 600-year-old legend of the Ty Unnos - a piece of Welsh folklore that claims that if you can build a house with four walls, a roof, and have a fire burning in your hearth in less than a day, then that house and the ground beneath it is yours.

George recruited Carwyn, who appeared on Amazing Spaces previously when he turned a cheap trailer tent into luxury caravan, and a crack team of other highly skilled former Amazing Spaces builders to attempt the challenge.

Together they design a stunning lakeside cabin built using the natural raw materials to be found in the surrounding lakes, hills and valleys near Machynlleth. The team have just two days to complete all preparations for this epic challenge.

And when the big day comes, so does the wild and stormy weather. Soon enough, George and the team find themselves soaking wet, in the pitch dark, with a monumental build to complete by sunrise.

Despite the challenges, Carwyn thoroughly enjoyed the build.

“I made the timber frame of the house and while it was a challenge in the time given, it was good fun,” the father-of-three said.

Carwyn, 45, also found the location for the show, as he explained.

“It’s near the reservoir, at the top of the Centre for Alternative Technology site near Machynlleth,” he said.

“I’m a carpenter and a joiner by trade, and I also teach courses on building with natural materials at CAT, and I thought that would be a good place for this.”

He went on: “Sometimes in television there’s a bit of trickery but after two days of preparation for the show we were literally filmed for 24 hours.”

To see how Carwyn and the team got on, watch Amazing Spaces Special: 24 Hour Build on tonight on Channel 4 at 8pm.
