Second World War veterans, including a Tanygroes man who was taken prisoner after being shot down flying over Berlin in 1944, came together at a special event to mark the 77th anniversary of D-Day.
The six veterans – all in their mid to late nineties – met up at the Penrallt Hotel in Aberporth on Sunday for the ‘Greatest Generation’ event organised by Age Cymru Dyfed.
The event commemorated the D-Day landings on 6 June 1944.
Three Ceredigion veterans joined the event, along with three from neighbouring Pembrokeshire.
Bill Needham from Aberporth was joined by Stan Bartlett, also from Aberporth, and Tanygroes man John Martin.
Stan was a navigator on Lancaster bombers at the end of the war, while John was taken prisoner after being shot down flying over Berlin in 1944.
The event also included two Pembrokeshire men who fought at the D-Day landings, and it was the first time that Ted Owens from Pembroke Dock and Tony Bird from Freshwater East had met.
Ted was a Royal Marine Commando and landed at Sword Beach on D-Day, while Tony was serving on HMS Clematis which took part in the D-Day landings, escorting landing craft to the beaches off the coast of Normandy.
Another war hero, Dennis Tidswell from Pembroke Dock, rounded out the special guests.
Lord Lieutenant of Dyfed, Sara Edwards, one of the special invited guests, that as the Queen’s representative she thanked them for all they did.
“You have been a resilient generation and have so much to teach us. It is with enormous humility that we thank you for all you did,” she said.
Age Cymru Dyfed’s veterans project manager Hugh Morgan said that West Wales should be rechristened “D-Day Corner”.
“You are our greatest generation and it is a privilege to share this day with you,” he said.
The veterans stories have been gathered for the West Wales Veterans Archive which is shared on the People’s Collection Wales in the National Library of Wales.
The event was also attended by youngsters from Cardigan Sea Scouts, Hayley Edwards from the Armed Forces Covenant and the band of the Royal British Legion Llanelli branch.
