A Lampeter town councillor has resigned as chairman of the authority’s parks committee having expressed his unhappiness at plans for Brownies to plant fruit and vegetables in Parc yr Orsedd.

Cllr Chris Thomas announced his intention to step down even though town mayor Cllr Ann Bowen Morgan pointed out that no decision on the proposal had yet been taken.

Members had previously been told that the youngsters were keen to undertake gardening duties as part of the ‘Incredible Edible’ project which encourages children to grow food.

However, at last month’s meeting Cllr Thomas explained that he felt such activities might be at odds with the terms of the park lease.

“One of the conditions was that the land should be kept as a play area for young children,” he added.

“A lot of people in Lampeter who are passionate about keeping the town as it is would be very disappointed if we were to allow this.

“Parc yr Orsedd is also a conservation area so you have to be very careful about what you put there.”
