Organisers of a benefit gig for a Llandysul arts and community centre which bore the brunt of last month’s flooding say they are desperate to see the venue back on its feet.
Y Pwerdy Powerhouse Community and Arts Centre suffered severe damage as waters of the nearby River Teifi rose to unprecedented levels during Storm Callum.
Now, local musicians Del Page and Annette McGrath, who regularly hold open mic sessions at the centre, have organised a charity gig at The Ginger Ale Factory in Lampeter’s North Road on Saturday, 24 November.
The event – featuring 14 live acts – is entitled Let’s Put The Power Back Into The Powerhouse.
“Although our heart goes out to those whose homes or businesses were flooded, the aim of this gig is to try and get The Powerhouse back on its feet,” Mr Page told the Cambrian News. “As we run open mic evenings down there this is a cause we feel very strongly about.
“We had been due to hold a Halloween event at The Powerhouse but obviously could not have foreseen what was going to happen.
“When I went down there in the morning I could see the water was coming up over its doors, but in the afternoon things just got so much worse.
“A telegraph pole which was swept into the side of the building took out a glass and wooden-frame wall – the river rose by around 15 feet and a door was blown out on the other side.
“The speed the water rose was quite simply phenomenal.”
The Lampeter gig lasts from 6pm until late – there is no entrance fee but donations will be welcomed.
