The iconic Cofiwch Dryweryn mural on the outskirts of Llanrhystud has been restored to its former glory.

Local artist Ruth Jên applied the final coat of paint under the beam of car headlights on Thursday evening to recreate the original painting of the wall in the 1960s by Meic Stephens.

The mural, which sits in a layby on the A487 between Aberystwyth and Llanrhystud, has been the target of vandalism since it was painted, over 50 years ago.

In the last year, vandals have tried to demolish the wall and in June this year, a swastika was daubed over the red wall.

Following an attempt to destroy the wall last year, it was purchased by Dilys Davies, a clinical psychologist, who said at the time of purchase: “I, like so many others, felt angry and hurt when the symbolic Cofiwch Dryweryn wall was damaged twice earlier this year.

“It led me to think of what I could do.”

The attempt to destroy the wall led to the Cofiwch Dryweryn mural appearing all across Wales as a reminder of the community near Bala that was flooded in 1965 to make way for a reservoir.

Over the past few weeks, the wall has been professionally rebuilt and on Thursday night, exactly 55 years to the day that Llyn Celyn was officially opened, Ruth Jên repainted the iconic mural.
