Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor students excel with 100% A-level pass rate

Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor students are celebrating outstanding A-level and vocational results, with top grades increasing again this year.

The college’s A-level learners at Dolgellau and Pwllheli achieved an overall pass rate of 100 per cent, with nearly 85 per cent attaining A* to C grades and 27 per cent of all A Level results at A* or A grade.

Vocational learners also achieved outstanding results, with nearly 30 per cent gaining the highest Distinction* or Distinction grades.

Dr Siôn Peters-Flynn, Principal of Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor and Coleg Menai, both part of Grŵp Llandrillo-Menai, said: “It’s great to see the all the hard work our learners have put in over the last two years come to fruition today. It’s particularly pleasing to see the strong proportion of high grades for A-level and vocational qualifications.

“Fifty-eight percent of our A-level results are at B grade or better, which is above the Wales and UK averages, and 29 per cent of our vocational results are at Distinction* or Distinction. I’m sure our learners will join me in thanking our staff members for the support and guidance they have provided to help them achieve such good results”

“We wish our learners all the very best as they confidently take the next steps in their career journeys, be it into higher education, apprenticeship or full-time employment. At the same time we look forward to welcoming the next cohort of eager learners in the coming days.”

Taylor Thomas, Dolgellau campus, achieved A*s in Mathematics, Physics and Further Mathematics. Taylor, who turned 18 on results day and will study mathematics at the University of Bristol, said: “This is the best 18th birthday present ever. I’d like to say thank you to the college for all the support and encouragement.”

Also at Dolgellau, Brendan Hansford achieved A’s for The Welsh Baccalaureate and Mathematics, and B’s for Physics and Chemistry and will study engineering in Exeter.

Mei Madrun Roberts achieved A* in Welsh and A’s in Sociology and Psychology in Pwllheli. The former Ysgol Botwnnog pupil, who will study Welsh in Cardiff, said:

“I particularly enjoyed the Welsh A-level for the variety of learning within one subject. I was fortunate enough to attend a showing of the Un Nos Ola Leuad theatre production which really brought the study to life.”

Pwllheli campus student and former Ysgol Eifionydd pupil, Dafydd Gwyn achieved an A* in Chemistry, C in Biology, and an A in Mathematics. Dafydd said: “I've had a great time at college, but I'm now ready for the next step, which is Cardiff University to study Medicinal Chemistry."

Osian James, a former Ysgol Glan y Môr pupil, achieved a triple Distinction for his Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport. Osian studied in Pwllheli and heads to Cardiff University to study Sports Coaching.

Aimee Plester (A* A* C) and Seren Wyn Jones (A* A C) both studied Level 3 Health and Social care at Dolgellau campus and are going to Bangor University to study Nursing.

Also from Dolgellau campus, Eilyr Williams achieved a Distinction in his Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering.
