VOLUNTEERS in Llandysul have been thanked after they put together a plan to take over the town’s library.

Ceredigion County Council has agreed a deal with the community group to take over the running of the library after it was initially earmarked for closure by the council in cost-cutting efforts.

After members of the council’s Cabinet backed the agreement for the group to take over the library, the efforts of the community group were praised for protecting a community facility.

Cllr Dafydd Edwards, the Cabinet member responsible for libraries, said: “With enormous thanks to the community in Llandysul, I hope we can agree to continue a library in Llandysul.”

Cllr Ifan Davies, the chair of the thriving communities scrutiny committee, said the committee had been impressed by the volunteers and their dedication to the library, but said it was vital that the council offered them support and advice when needed.

He said: “I think it’s extremely important we are there to help them. If they pick up the phone we must be there to help them. If word went out we weren’t there to support them we won’t be able to get volunteers in Cardigan and Aberystwyth.”

Llandysul councillor Keith Evans said he welcomed the commitment from the local community to protect the library.

He said: “As the local member it was wonderful to see a group of local people volunteer.

“There was a message there that if we go halfway to meeting people, they will help to run the services.”
